Jobs decline for second consecutive quarter in June 2009

Stats NZ have released the latest LEED (Linked Employer-Employee Data) employment data showing that ‘filled jobs’ decreased 2.8% to 1,797,630 in the June 2009 quarter.

Year on year (June 09 v Jun 08) 14 of the 19 industry categories showed declines with Manufacturing and Admin & Support Services with the largest declines. Healthcare & Social Assistance and Public Admin & Safety showed the largest increases.

All age groups below 50 years showed a decrease in ‘filled jobs’ with those in the 15-19 and 20-24 age groups hardest hit, while those over 50 enjoyed increase employment, particularly 60+.

The only region to see an increase in employment was Taranaki while Auckland, Canterbury and Waikato all saw large annual decreases in jobs.
