Speed reads for 21 August 2010

1. Chris Foresman from ArsTechnica summarises the “subscription problem” that virtually the entire publishing industry has with Apple.

2. IDC estimates US online ad growth of 15% year-on-year for Q2 2010, equating to $7.2 billion in ad revenue for the quarter. It is tied with Q409 as the highest quarters by ad revenue since Q1 2005.

3. Article here about the 2010 forecasts for online video advertising revenue in the US. The CEO of Tremor Media (second largest video ad network in the US) is quoted quite extensively throughout the article about his insights and views as to the dynamics of the onilne video ad market.  An eMarketer chart in the article also shows that by 2011, online video ads will overtake online classifieds to be the 3rd largest online advertising category, after Search and Display.

4. Berlin based research2guidance says that the smartphone app market had revenues of $1.7 billion in 2009, and it has already clocked $2.2 billion in revenue for the first half of 2010. They predict that annual revenues for smartphone apps will grow to $15 billion by 2013.
